DIY Mini Confetti Pennant Flags

A colorful spin on classic mini pennant flags!

(Also great for photo props, cake toppers, & kids' wands!)

Lately I've been obsessed with having little wands and props for E, so for Valentine's Day this year I decided to make some confetti pennant flags! A spin on my confetti bookmark DIY concept, I changed it up just a smidge to make these cute pennant flags that can also be used as photo props, cake toppers, or even "magic" wands for pretend play.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Clear or iridescent vinyl fabric (something like this* or this* or this*) — use iridescent if you want a little extra reflective magic, but clear will show off the confetti inside better

  • Confetti!

  • A sewing machine (or just a sturdy needle & thread, but will be a much more time intensive)

  • Wooden dowels and/or lollipop sticks

  • Hot glue gun

  • Scissors

  • Assorted ribbons, stickers, and notions

Scissors and cut iridescent vinyl fabric on table

To make the pennant flags, all you need to do is cut out two triangle shapes — it might be easiest to cut a template from cardboard first so you can then trace it over and over to make sure you keep both sides the same size.

BONUS: While a mini pennant flag shape is classic, you can also have fun with different shapes! I also made a heart wand, and it might just be my favorite. :)

Sew down two sides of the flag, leaving one side open (for now) so you can add the confetti. (If you're like me and can't sew all clean and pretty, try using different style stitches and/or go over the sides a few times to make it look more artsy and intentionally wild. 😂)

Next, add your confetti! (Pictured, I used XO Disco, How Sweet It Is To Be Loved, Be Mine, & Rewrite The Stars. You can use any mix you'd like from the shop, or maybe even a custom confetti mix! How fun would these be with custom confetti pieces inside?!)

Tip #1: Use a pencil or pen to "push" the confetti down into the flag to fill. You don't want to overfill it, though!

Tip #2: Use a pair of tweezers to position any particular shapes/words into place inside the vinyl if you want them to show through in a certain spot.

Once you have your confetti inside, sew up the final side.

Using hot glue, adhere your dowel/lollipop stick to the back edge of the flag. (Alternatively, you can choose to leave a small gap in the bottom left corner of the flag where it is now sewn together — slip your stick inside the flag, then use a dab of hot glue to keep it in place and seal up the corner of the flag.)

While the confetti pennants will look awesome as-is, you can also choose to embellish the outside with a few gems/stickers.

Tie an assortment of matching/contrasting ribbons to your stick. (If they keep sliding, add a dab of hot glue!)

I can just imagine all the different themes and occasions to make these for — birthdays, Halloween, Christmas, graduation. The possibilities are endless!
